WILTON.Death of Mr. John Swayne.—We have to announce the death of Mr. John Swayne, of Wilton, the late Clerk of the Peace, who for many years rendered important services to the county. The event, which has not been unexpected for some little time, took place on Tuesday morning. It is now nearly 70 years ago that Mr. Swayne first took part in the business of the county as assistant to his uncle, Mr. James Swayne, who then held the appointment of Clerk of the Peace. He was appointed Deputy Clerk in 1804, and succeeded his uncle in 1824, the year after the appointment of Mr. John Peniston, as County Surveyor. From that period up to the time of his resigning office last year, Mr. Swayne commanded the rest and esteem of every magistrate who was brought into contact with him. He had a profound knowledge of the law, and the Court of Quarter Sessions never hesitated to act upon his advice. In the year 1858, the magistrates presented him with his portrait as a token of acknowledgment of the able and efficient manner in which he had discharged his duties ; and Sir John Avery and Mr. Matcham, the two chairmen of Quarter Sessions, testified on that occasion to his clear judgement, his general information, and his constant readiness to take upon himself the full responsibilities of his important office. He died at a ripe old age, having, we understand, completed his 87th year on the 12th April last.
