Jeffry Gartrell of Breage made bequests to his Gartrell grandchildren in his 1679 will. The identity of Jeffry's son, their father, needs to be verified, as he evidently died within his father's lifetime. While there are multiple gaps in the early Breage parish registers, Jeffry's son was probably John Gartrell on the basis that
(a) in 1664 John Gartrell of Breage paid 2 shillings tax on one hearth. The only other Gartrell in Breage paying hearth tax at this time was the said Jeffry Gartrell;
(b) in September 1664 John Gartrell witnessed the will of Jane Trevillian of Breage, widow. The following January John Gartrell of Breage with Alexander Carleene of the same place took inventory of her goods & chattels.
(c) on 7 Mar 1664/5 Ann daughter of John Gartrell was buried in Breage;
It should also be noted that John Gartrell of Breage is not listed as having taken the Protestation Oath in March 1641/2. As a son of Geffry (who took the Oath), he would have been under age.
