News by the South African mail states that Mr. Harry Spackman, son of the late Mr. B. L. Spackman, R.E., and son-in-law of Mr. J. Thornton, Kelvin Grove, Batley, has been promoted honorary captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He enlisted some 32 years ago, and spent over 15 years in the ranks and six years as sergeant-major before getting his commission as quartermaster at the beginning of the Boer War.

ASHES SCATTERED
Col. H. Spackman, Exmouth, Cremated at Bristol
Col. Harry Spackman, of the Old Vicarage, Withycombe, Exmouth, who died on Monday, was cremated yesterday at Bristol, and his ashes were afterwards scattered over the Garden of Rest.
Col. Spackman served for nearly 42 years in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and took part in the South African and Great Wars. He was assistant county commissioner for East Devon for St. John Ambulance Brigade, and for some time was chief officer of the Exmouth Fire Brigade.
