In 1861 Joseph Lewis, aged 16, born in Burton Wilts, single, horse keeper, was lodging at 12 Compton Mews, Bloomsbury St. George, Middlesex.

In 1871 Joseph Lewis, aged 27, born in Purton Wilts, journeyman painter, and wife Emma, aged 26, born in Plymouth Devonshire, were living at 20 Buckingham Ter., Kensington London. With them were children Maria (3) of Paddington Middx, Joseph (2) of Chelsea Middx, brother William Lewis (11) of Chelsea, scholar, and sister-in-law Norah Lewis (28) of Plymouth Devonshire, married, dressmaker.
