Abstract of the Will of William Vaughan of Cathley in the Parish of Towin in the County of Merioneth, Esq., written 28 Aug 1677, inventory taken 13 Sep 1677, proved 23 Sep 1678. 3

Names his son and heir apparent Jenkin Vaughan.

Gives & bequeaths 40 shillings toward the cathedral church of Bangor.

Gives & bequeaths 6 shillings or 4 bushels of lime toward the reparation of the church of Towin.

Desires that his wife and son Jenkin Vaughan and such other of his sons who shall become heirs to be charitable toward his aunt Alice Owen, widow, his nurse Catherine Davis, widow, his servants Rees Jones and Lewis William, and likewise to his old servants Evan John Hugh, Thomas James, and William John Elissa.

Forgives and remits all debts owed to him by the said Evan John Hugh.

Remits all arrears of rent due to him from his tenants the said Rees Jones and Lewis ap Rees.

Gives 40 shillings to his servant William Prise and to his servant Anne Prise 10 shillings.

Gives to his son and heir apparent Jenkin Vaughan his golden signet ring and all his books except those in his bedchamber which he gives to his wife.

Leaves as heirlooms to descend to his heirs-at-law his capital messuages of Cathley and Gwyddgwion and their assorted household contents....

Gives & bequeaths to his wife Anne Vaughan all his silver plate, household stuff and implements of husbandry, desiring her to bestow according to her discretion the chamber furniture to their daughters Anne Lloyd, Elizabeth Vaughan, Gwen Poole, Jane Vaughan and Margaret Vaughan.

Gives & bequeaths to his wife all his corn at Gwiddgwion both in the barn and in the ground.

Gives & bequeaths to his wife all his cattle, kine, oxen, horses, mares, sheep and other beasts at Gwiddgwion.

Gives & bequeaths to his wife all his fodder, hay and straw at Gwiddgwion as provision for the cattle there.

Gives & bequeaths to his wife all his swine and poultry, and all the household provisions of beef, mutton, pork, bacon, fish, butter, cheese and all other edible provisions for the better maintenance of his younger children.

Gives & bequeaths to his daughter Gwen Poole six cows and six calves, four oxen and two bull oxen of three or four years old, one horse and one hundred sheep.

Gives & bequeaths the rest and residue of his personal estate to his wife whom he appoints the sole Executrix of his last will and testament.

Refers to the fact that several persons stand obliged to him by bonds for payment of money, which bonds are laid up in a bundle that concerns his accounts and the rent that he received or should have received and had paid from his son[in-law] Richard Poole's estate for the maintenance and preferment of himself and his brothers and sisters according to the trust reposed in him [William Vaughan] and the true intent and meaning of the Articles and Agreement made upon the marriage of the said Richard Poole and Gwen his daughter, between himself on the one part and Richard's uncle Anthony Thomas on the other part, and his sister Poole* on the third part.

Gives, devises & bequeaths all his messuages, lands, tenements, hereditaments & premises called Gwiddgwion, Tythin mawr in Aberdyfi, Tythin mawr in Penhelig issa alias Tythin Jenkin John Evan &c... to his wife Anne Vaughan during the term of her natural life, and after her death to his friends & kinsmen William Pugh of Mathavarn in county Montgomery Esqr—his brother-in-law, John Lloyd of Maes y Pandy in county Merioneth Esqr—his father-in-law†, Richard Anwyll of Parke in county Merioneth Esqr—his uncle, Owen Anwyll of Llwyn in county Merioneth Esqr—his cousin, and Edward Hughes of Ty ffrin gwyn in county Merioneth Gentleman—his kinsman, directing that they shall pay an annuity of £5 to his son John Vaughan out of the rents, issues & profits of his estates so bequeathed during the term of his natural life, one shilling weekly to his nurse Catherine David.

He also directs that the abovenamed friends & kinsmen pay an annuity to his son Lewis Vaughan out of rents, issues & profits of his estates in Tythin y Penrhyn alias Glan y wern, Tire y ffynnon vawr and tir Eithinog.

Gives, devises & bequeaths to his servant Rees Jones the messuage where he now dwells, along with the gardens and houses adjoining it for the term of his natural life in recompense of his good and faithful service to both himself [William] and his parents.

Gives, devises & bequeaths to his sons John Vaughan, Henry Vaughan (if he be now living), Hugh Vaughan, Griffith Vaughan and Richard Vaughan, all his messuages, lands, tenements & hereditaments called Tythin y Skian? Talyllyn?, Tir David ap Aeda Rhose y ---?---, Tythin Ty yn y Parke, Penrhyn Skian?, y Llechlwyd issa, Gwern y Llechwyd, Gwern y Gamlas? gôch and others for the terms of their natural lives.

Gives & bequeaths £150 to his daughter Elizabeth and £7 yearly for her maintenance after the death of her mother.

Gives & bequeaths £150 to his daughter Jane and £7 yearly for her maintenance after the death of her mother.

Gives & bequeaths £150 to his daughter Margarett and £6 yearly for her maintenance after the death of her mother.

Desires that Edward Vaughan of Llwydiart Esqr, Lewis Anwill of Parke Esqr, Lewis Owen of Pengarth Esqr and his aunt Catherine Anwill of Llwyn widow and Mr Richard Anwill of Dôlfriog gent be overseers of his last will and testament.
