DEATH OF A SCHOOL ATTENDANCE OFFICER.—Mr. Frederick Burfield Dyer, senior school attendance officer, a position he has filled with great assiduity, tact and ability for nearly 20 years, passed away on Monday at his residence, 14, Whitley-road. The deceased, who was 63 years of age, had been in somewhat indifferent health for some time. Formerly Mr. and Mrs. Dyer carried on a boarding house on the Royal parade, and since disposing of it they have lived in Whitley-road. By his unassuming bearing and the conscientious way in which he went about his duties Mr. Dyer had ingratiated himself with all with whom he came into contact. He was not a believer in prosecutions, but preferred to attain his end by other means. Many a child had received from him a kindly lecture on the necessity of regular attendance at school, which has ended with some coppers changing hands. One lad, a truant, the son of a widow, was dealt with by him. The lad was warned and the result of his conduct pointed out, and by taking a personal interest in the case the lad was induced to attend school regularly. Some years afterwards a fine, well-set-up sergeant in H.M. Army stopped Mr. Dyer and, pointing to the stripes on his arm, said, "I have you to thank for these stripes, Mr. Dyer." In connection with the Mayor's Poor and Cripple Fund Mr. Dyer rendered very valuable service. He was an auditor of the Eastbourne Mutual Building Society, and for many years had fulfilled the same office for the Pevensey-road Congregational Church. There are five grown-up children of the marriage, three sons and two daughters. One son holds an appointment in the Land Valuation Department, and the others are watchmakers and jewellers. Mrs. Dyer, the widow, is a sister of Mr. J. T. Wenham, of Pevensey-road. The funeral will take place this afternoon at Ocklynge, the first portion of the service being at the Pevensey-road Congregational Church at about 2.45.
