Jane daughter of Thomas Newick of Etchingham, labourer, and Sarah (baptismal record)
----------------------------
At the time of the 1851 England Census, Jane Hicks, age 29, born in Etchingham Sussex, and husband James Hicks, age 31, born in Ticehurst Sussex, ag. lab., were living in Flimwell, Ticehurst. With them were children (born in Ticehurst): John (7), scholar, Sarah A. (5), scholar, Mercy (3) of Etchingham
At the time of the 1861 England Census Jane Hicks, age 38, born in Etchingham Sussex, and husband James Hicks, age 39, born in Ticehurst Sussex, agricultural labourer, were living in Great Bayhall, Pembury, Kent. With them were children (born in Ticehurst): John (17), agricultural labourer, Mary Ann (16)*, Mercy (13), Thomas (7), Emerly (8 months)
* Mary Ann does not appear in the 1851 Census with her family. In her stead was Sarah A. There is no birth registration for a Mary Ann Hicks in the Ticehurst district for 1845-1846, only a Sarah Ann Hicks. It seems only right to conclude they were not two separate daughters and that her name was Sarah Ann not Mary Ann. This is confirmed by Sarah's marriage to Mark Hammond, who was called uncle of David Hicks (son of John Hicks, the eldest son of James and Jane).
At the time of the 1871 England Census, Jane Hicks, age 49, born in Etchingham Sussex, and husband James Hicks, age 48, born in Ticehurst Sussex, agricultural labourer, were living in Rowly [...], Brenchley, Kent.
