DEATH OF MR. H. W. REYNOLDS.
Well-known Swindon Resident.
IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL.
By the death of Mr. Herbert William Reynolds, of Sussex House, Devizes road, Swindon, which took place on Saturday, after a short illness, following an operation in a London Nursing Home, the town has lost a highly respected inhabitant.
Mr. Reynolds, who was 60 years of age, was a member of a very old Wiltshire and Gloucestershire family, being the son of the late Ald. William Reynolds, a former Mayor of Swindon. Mr. Herbert Reynolds and one of his brothers, Mr. Robert Reynolds, have carried on since their father's death, the old established business of Reynolds and Co. (Swindon), Ltd., curriers and boot and shoe factors, in the Market Square.
Mr. Reynolds had enjoyed good health up to a month or so ago, when he had to consult a specialist, and went to a nursing home in London, where he underwent an operation for an internal complaint. This was successful, and the patient was apparently making rapid recovery. Indeed, every hope was held out by his medical attendant as recently as last Saturday morning, that the patient would speedily regain his usual good health and strength, but he had a sudden relapse and passed peacefully away on Saturday from heart failure.
Mr. Reynolds leaves a widow and two daughters, to whom the deepest sympathy will be extended by a large circle of friends.
The eldest daughter, Mrs. Cyril Winn, is at present residing in Leeds, and the younger one is at home with her mother. Mr. Reynolds mother still survives, and is in the enjoyment of fairly good health, considering that she is over 80 years of age. She resides at Chiseldon with one of her daughters, Miss Reynolds.
The deceased is also survived by three brothers and two sisters. The eldest brother, Mr. Robert Reynolds, is the managing director of the firm of Messrs. Reynolds and Co. Another brother, Mr. Philip Reynolds, has been in Canada for many years, and the third, Mr. Arthur Reynolds, is with the firm of Messrs. George Morris and Son, Ltd., London, and resides at Carshalton. One sister, Mrs. H. Rivers, a widow, lives at Hucclecote, Gloucester.
Hospital Trustee.
Although Mr. Reynolds never sought public work and honours in connection with the municipal life of the borough, he took a very keen and active interest in numerous semi-public institutions. He was a trustee of the Victoria Hospital in which he took a great interest, and was for some years an active member and vice-chairman of the management committee. He was also a director of the Swindon Building Society.
Freemasonry claimed a great deal of his time and attention, and he held a high position in the order. He was a Past Master of the Royal Sussex Lodge of Emulation, 355, in which he has ably carried out the onerous duties of secretary for the lengthy period of 20 years. He was also Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden of the Province of Wilts, and a Companion of the Wiltshire Royal Arch Chapter, 355. He was also one of the founders of the Lodge of Remembrance, 4037.
His favourite sports were golf and bowls and until the last few years he was frequently to be seen on the links of the North Wilts Golf Club, at Chiseldon. He was also a member of the Westlecott Bowling Club.
The Funeral.
The funeral took place at the Parish Church on Wednesday. The body was brought from London by motor hearse and the cortege left deceased's residence shortly before two o'clock, proceeding along Devizes road, Wood street and Cricklade street to the church. Here a large congregation assembled....
The chief mourners were Mrs. H. W. Reynolds (widow), Mr. Robert Reynolds and Mr. Arthur Reynolds (brothers), Miss Mabel Reynolds and Mrs. H. Rivers (sisters), Mr. Cyril Winn, of Leeds (son-in-law), Mrs. R. Reynolds (sister-in-law), Mr. A. C. Plummer (brother-in-law), Miss J. Reynolds, of Rowde (cousin), Miss Thompson, of High Wycombe (cousin), Miss Frances Reynolds, of Clovelly (cousin), Miss Margaret Reynolds (niece), Mr. W. J. Rivers (nephew), Mr. Tom Chandler (uncle) and Mr. C. Crump....
