THE LATE MR. W. REYNOLDS

FUNERAL AT SWINDON PARISH CHURCH.

The mortal remains of the late Mr. William Reynolds, J.P., were laid to rest in the new burial ground attached to Swindon Parish Churchyard on Wednesday afternoon. In accordance with the deceased gentleman's wishes, the funeral was of a very quiet and unostentatious character. The esteem in which Mr Reynolds was held was exemplified by the large number of townspeople who attended to pay their last token of respect. Along the route of the said procession, blinds were drawn at all the residences and shops in High Street and Cricklade Street.

The cortege left deceased's late residence in the Market Square punctually at 2.30 p.m. At the head of the funeral procession there were the Deputy Chief Constable (Superintendent Robinson), Inspector Cowdrey, and a number of constables in uniform, and behind the four-wheeled bier, on which the coffin was placed, walked members of the family, magistrates, representatives of the Victoria Hospital, members of the Town Council, and personal friends of the deceased gentleman.

The procession was met at the entrance to the Church by the Vicar (the Rev. C. A. Mayall) and the Rev. E. E. H. Lough (curate), and as the coffin was borne up the aisle the organist (Mr. W. H. Painter) played "I know that my Redeemer liveth."

The service which was conducted by the Vicar, was most impressive. The opening hymn was "Christ will gather in His own," after which the 90th Psalm was recited. Following the reading of the lesson by the Rev. Lough, the well-known hymn, "On the Resurrection morning," was feelingly sung by the congregation, and at the close of the service the organist played the "Dead March" in "Soul" and "O, rest in the Lord." The last rites were conducted by the Vicar.

The body reposed in a shell, with an outer coffin of polished oak with massive brass furniture, and the breastplate bore the inscription:—

WILLIAM REYNOLDS,
Born Aug. 29th, 1844
Passed away July 6th, 1913.

On each side of the coffin there were three beautiful wreaths, and the breastplate was covered with a cross of crimson carnations from members of the family.

The chief mourners were Mr. H. W. Reynolds, Mr. R. Reynolds, Mr. P. Reynolds, and Mr. A. Reynolds, sons ; Mr. Geoffrey Reynolds, grandson ; Mr. H. Rivers (Gloucester), son-in-law ; Mr. E. G. Wainwright (Worcester), son-in-law ; Mr. Frank Reynolds (Devizes) and Mr. Charles Reynolds (Devizes), cousins ; Mr. J. H. Chandler, Mr. T. H. Chandler, and Mr. J. A. Y. Matthews, brothers-in-law....
