In 1871 John Chandler, aged 57, born in Pewsey, draper, widower, was living at 35 Wood St., Swindon, Wilts. With him were children (born in Swindon): Susanna E. (20), Katherine A (19), Charles F. (12), scholar, Frank (11), scholar, Beatrice M. (7), scholar, Edith H. (6), scholar, and Maria Keens (32) of Newbury Berks., governess, and assistants.
In 1873 John Chandler was a witness at the marriage of his daughter Katherine Anne to Henry Lavington.
In 1881 John Chandler, aged 62, born in Pewsey Wilts, widower, draper, was living in Swindon Wilts. With him was son Frank (21) of Swindon, draper.

DEATH OF A PROMINENT WILTSHIRE FREE-MASON.—The death took place on Friday of Mr. John Chandler, at his residence in Wood Street, Swindon, after a long illness. Deceased was in his 84th year, had been closely identified with the public life of the town for over half a century, and he carried on a large drapery business, from which he retired ten years ago. He was a member of the first local board of the town, also a director of many local companies. When the volunteer corps were formed in the early fifties, the deceased was one of the first to join, and after a number of years' service he retired with the rank of captain. He was a staunch churchman and Conservative, and for over twenty-five years was one of the churchwardens of the parish church. He took a deep interest in Freemasonry, and was the oldest member of the Royal Sussex Lodge of Emulation, Swindon, of which he was a Past Master. He was also a P.P.S.G.W. of Wilts, and he held the office of Director of Ceremonies for Wilts for over 30 years, retiring recently in favour of his son, Mr. John H. Chandler. In addition the deceased held the high degree of K.T. and Rex Croix. The deceased leaves five sons and five daughters. His wife predeceased him many years ago.
