Sources & Notes

1 Wiltshire Baptisms Index 1530-1917.

2 At first it seemed natural to assume that Henry married as his first wife Susannah Chiverson on 10 Nov 1718 in Avebury. However, there were four children of Henry and Susan christened in Avebury from 1718 to 1730 who could not have been children of Henry Horsell of Wootton Bassett. For example, John son of Henry Horsel was christened in 1718 in Avebury; Reuben son of Henry Horsel was christened in 1718 in Wootton Bassett, on different dates within the said year. Susannah Horsell was buried in Avebury on 18 Feb 1738/9 and Henry Horsell re-married to Sarah Hayward in the same place on 27 Dec 1739. Again, it is likely this was not Henry Horsell of Wootton Bassett. There is the question of the identity of Henry Horsell who married Sarah Skull in Wootton Bassett on 9 Jan 1720/1. At face value this could have been Henry's second marriage, after having been married to an unknown wife for just over a year. However, it is likely that Sarah Skull married a different Henry Horsell, most likely this Henry's uncle, who was in his mid 30s in 1720. For the moment, therefore, Sarah wife of Henry Horsell named in his Will is shown here as mother of all his children.
