Edith Horsell

  • Born: Abt 1722, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England
  • Married: 10 Feb 1746/7, Purton with Braydon, Wiltshire, England 1
  • Buried: 31 Jul 1773, Purton with Braydon, Wiltshire, England 2

  Research Notes:

In 1751 Edith Packer was bequeathed 1 guinea in her father's Will.

-------------------------

Incorrectly called Lydia Wife of Richd. Packer in the burial register, dying at the age of 51 years. While this has no bearing on the identity of the mother of Richard Packer's eldest child, John Packer, who was about 3 years old when Edith Packer was named in her father's Will, there is no record of Richard ever having married a Lydia either in Purton Wilts or elsewhere in England. There is no burial entry in the Purton parish register for Edith between 1760 (birth & death of her youngest daughter, Elinor) and 1773. 3

  Marriage Information:

Edith married Richard Packer, son of John Packer of Purton and Mary, on 10 Feb 1746/7 in Purton with Braydon, Wiltshire, England. (Richard Packer was born about 1705, christened on 1 Feb 1707/8 in Purton with Braydon, Wiltshire, England and was buried on 6 Dec 1776 in Purton with Braydon, Wiltshire, England, aged 71 years.)

3 Curiously enough and as a point of comparison, in the Will of Edith's great-grandfather, Bartholomew Horsell of Wootton Bassett (written 1701), he names in order his daughters Mary, Ann, Lidia and Elizabeth. In the Parish Register, they are Mary, Ann, Edith and Elizabeth.
