DEATH OF MR. STEPHEN BRITCHER.
A PROMINENT FREEMASON
The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. Stephen Britcher, of Priory Bank, Pembury-road, Tonbridge, at the age of 52 years, following a short illness. Born in Tonbridge in February, 1876, the son of the late Mr. George Britcher, educated first at the late Mr. Lane's School at Tonbridge and afterwards in France, he entered the whole fruit business in Covent Garden and became a partner with his brother, George, in the firm Messrs. G. and S. Britcher, in the Borough, from which he retired six years ago.
The late Mr. Britcher's principal interest in life was Freemasonry, and he attended its meetings frequently—often several in the course of a week—in all parts of the County of Kent and in London. He joined the "Borough" Lodge, of which—and of several others—he was a Past Master, and attained Grand Lodge rank, being a P.Grd. Std. Bearer. He was at the time of his death Secretary of the Lodge of the Men of Kent and Kentish Men, and was a Joining Past Master of the Medway Lodge. He was Secretary of the Medway Chapter and of the Crays Valley Chapter, and of the Medway Mark Lodge. A founder of many lodges, at the time of his death he was a subscribing member of twenty-one lodges and chapters in England and three in France. He was a patron of all the Masonic Charities.
For a period of three years—1923-26—Mr. Britcher was a member of the Urban District Council. He was a Freeman of the City of London, a member of the Worshipful Company of Glovers, a Fellow of the Zoological Society, a member of the National Rose Society and many other societies, and a generous supporter of local institutions.
He had travelled extensively on the Continent, and was very keen on the encouragement of friendly relations between England and France, and the organisation of his summer excursions from Tonbridge to Boulogne will be remembered by many.
His religious views were High Church, and he was a member of the local branch of the English Church Union.
Mr. Britcher was unmarried. He is survived by three brothers and two sisters....
