SPORTS CAR OVERTURNS
A former Tonbridge resident and his son were killed in a car crash at Farningham on Saturday.
The victims were George Thomas Britcher (63) and John Charles Britcher (24), both of 15 The Drive, Sidcup. They were in a sports car.
The inquest was held at Swanley on Wednesday, conducted by Mr. W. A. Thomson (deputy coroner).
Evidence of identification was given by Robert William Britcher, who said his father and brother were market salesmen. On Saturday afternoon they had been visiting farms which his father owned in the West Malling district.
Frederick Percy Litchfield, of Brasted, said he was travelling towards Maidstone on the afternoon of the accident, when his attention was drawn to a sports car which appeared to be travelling sideways. Witness was forced to mount the kerb and the other car passed within a foot of him.
Cecil Day, of West Wickham, said he was overtaken by the sports car just before the accident. There was a solo motor-cycle some way in front, and the sports car made straight for it and the driver did not seem to notice it until he was about a foot away. Then he pulled out to his off-side, then swerved back to his proper side of the road. The car mounted the kerb, and when witness saw it, it was twisting in the air with its wheels uppermost.
Medical evidence showed that death was instantaneous, both men's skulls being fractured.
A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
Mr. Britcher was a frequent visitor to Tonbridge and well-known to many middle-aged residents, especially by his few surviving school friends who attended St. Stephen's School in their boyhood days. One of his brothers was the late Cr. Stephen Britcher, of Priory Bank, Pembury Road, where his sister, Miss Britcher, now resides. Another brother is Cr. Frank Britcher, who formerly had a business in High Street, but removed to Hythe soon after the war.
Much sympathy has been extended to the widow and mother, Mrs. Maria Britcher, 15 The Drive, Sidcup.
The funeral took place yesterday (Thursday), preceded by a memorial service at the Methodist Church, Chislehurst West.
