SUDDEN DEATH. — On Tuesday morning, Mr. Charles Akhurst, of Park-road, Sittingbourne, died from heart disease after an illness of a few hours. Mr. Akhurst, who was 48 years of age, was the principal and oldest barge captain in the service of the exors. of the late Mr. C. Burley*, brickmaster and barge-owner. He had been in Mr. Burley's service ever since he was 16 years of age, and by dint of perseverance and application to his work soon had the command of a barge. Mr. Akhurst had been the master of several barges, the barge C.B. having been under his charge for seven years. He was one of the most respected captains who leave the creek, and was generally liked. Mr. Akhurst came home with the barge May on Sunday morning and on Monday he was about as usual. During the day he visited Milton Bowling Green, and was apparently in good health. On Monday evening he was taken ill, and was attended by Dr. Burroughs, _locum tenens_ for Dr. F. Grayling (who had attended Mr. Akhurst off and on for an affection of the heart). He never rallied, however, and died on the following morning. The news of his death has been received with general expressions of regret. Mr. Akhurst was the oldest member of the local branch of the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society, and he was likewise an old member of the Milton Court of Foresters. The remains of the deceased were interred at the Sittingbourne Cemetery yesterday (Friday) afternoon, when a large number of barge captains followed.
