  Research Notes:

The Chronica de Fundatoribus et Fundatione of Tewkesbury Abbey names “Gilberto” as son of “Amiciam, Ricardo de Clare nuptam” and his succession as Earl of Gloucester. He succeeded his father in 1217 as Earl of Hertford. He was recognised as Earl of Gloucester in Nov 1217 soon after the death of his maternal aunt Isabel Ctss of Gloucester.

The Annales Cambriæ record the death in 1230 of "Gilbertus comes Gloverniæ". The Annales Londonienses record the death in 1230 of "Gilbertus de Clare comes Gloucestriæ". The Annals of Dunstable record that “comes Gloucestriæ” died in 1230. He died while returning from an expedition to Brittany. The Chronica de Fundatoribus et Fundatione of Tewkesbury Abbey records the death “apud Penros in minori Brytannia” in 1230 of “Gilberto…Gloucestriæ et Hertfordiæ comes” and his burial “in ecclesia nostra de Tewkes”. The Annals of Tewkesbury record the death “in nocte Sanctorum Crispini et Crispiniani apud Penros in Britannia” of “Gilbertus de Clare comes Gloucestriæ et Hertfordiæ” and his burial in “ecclesiæ beatæ Mariæ Theokesberiæ”. The Annals of Worcester record the death in 1230 of “Gilbertus comes Gloucestriæ”. 1

G. de Clare, earl of Gloucester, has made fine with the king by £200 for having the custody of the land and the marriage of the son and heir of Hugh Poinz, who is one of the heirs of Robert Bardolf , of which £200 he is to render £100 to the king at Michaelmas in the ninth year and the other £100 at Easter next following in the tenth year....

G. de Clare, earl of Gloucester, has made fine with the king by 2000 marks for marrying his first-born daughter to Baldwin, son of Baldwin de Redvers, son of William de Redvers, earl of Devon , and for having 200 librates of land in simple custody, without the castle , from the land formerly of the aforesaid W. earl of Devon until the aforesaid Baldwin comes of age...

6 Nov 1230, Westminster

H. de Burgh, earl of Kent and justiciar of England , has made fine with the king by 7000 marks for having custody of the lands formerly of G. de Clare, earl of Gloucester and Hertford, until the earl’s heirs come of age, with the custody and marriage of the same heirs . Order to the sheriff of Kent to cause the justiciar to have full seisin of all lands formerly of the same earl in his bailiwick, as aforesaid. Memorandum that he will pay 2000 marks of the aforesaid 7000 marks cash down, then 500 marks at Easter in the fifteenth year, 500 marks at Michaelmas in the same year, and thus from year to year at the same terms until he has rendered the aforesaid 7000 marks in full.

Gilbert married Lady Isabel MARSHAL, daughter of William MARSHAL "The Protector", Earl of Pembroke, and Isabel DE CLARE, Countess Strigoil, on 9 Oct 1217. (Isabel MARSHAL was born on 9 Oct 1200 in Pembroke Castle, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales, died on 16 Jan 1239/40 in Berkhamstead Castle, Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire and was buried in Beaulieu Abbey, Beaulieu, Hampshire, England.)

  Marriage Notes:

Gilbert and Isabelle were second cousins.
