Abstract of the Will of Thomas Short of Wootton Bassett in the County of Wilts, Gentleman, written 31 Dec 1653, proved 28 Nov 1654. 4

Gives 5 shillings to the parish church of Wootton Bassett.

Gives 5 shillings to the poor people of the same parish to be equally distributed among them.

Gives & bequeaths to his son John Short his messuages, lands and tenement in Stratton in co. Wilts which he lately purchased from his brother-in-law Francis Criple. He also gives to John a flockbed, one great kettle, and two platters.

Gives & bequeaths to his son William Short his messuages, lands and tenement in Stratton in co. Wilts which he lately purchased from Thomas Baylie, gent. He also gives to William a little pot, one middle kettle, and two platters.

Gives & bequeaths £60 to his daughter Anne Short, along with the tenement in which he now resides. He also gives to Anne a featherbed, his biggest brass pot, two platters, a table board and frame, five joined? stools, and one cupboard.

Gives & bequeaths to his son Vincent Short his burgages, lands and tenements in Wootton Bassett originally bought from one Robert Coyle. Additionally he forgives Vincent the debts he owes, and gives him a brass pan, his best great coat, and his best suit of wearing apparel.

Gives & bequeaths 30 shillings each to Katherine and Joan the daughters of his son Vincent.

Gives & bequeaths to his son Thomas Short his gown, and 20 shillings each to Thomas's three children John, Gabriel* and Avis.

* Gabriel died 11 months later.

Wills that his current wife Anne be responsible for the tuition and raising of his (their) children John, William and Anne, until they reach the age of twenty one. If his wife Anne dies or remarries, then he charges his sons Vincent and Thomas with the same responsibility.

Makes his wife Anne sole executrix of his last will and testament.

Nominates his sons Vincent and Thomas to be overseers of his will, giving them 12 pence each for their efforts.
