SERVED TOWN FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS
Retired Surveyor's death after Boxing Day party
Formerly surveyor to Milton Urban District Council, and late joint surveyor to the combined Sittingbourne and Milton authority, Mr. Albert Walter Callaway died suddenly at his home, 44, Park Road, Sittingbourne, in the early hours of Sunday.
Mr. Callaway, who was aged 71, had just returned home from a Boxing Day party, and was garaging his car when he collapsed and died almost immediately.
Although he had been in ill health for some years, Mr. Callaway had remained active up to the time of his death.
He was born at 7, Park Road, and was educated at Borden Grammar School. On leaving school, Mr. Callaway was articled to Mr. Farnham, then surveyor to Milton Urban District Council, and he later left to become assistant surveyor at Sidcup. Subsequently Mr. Callaway was appointed surveyor to Nailsworth (Gloucestershire) Urban District Council.
In 1920 he returned to the district on being appointed surveyor to Milton Urban District Council. On the amalgamation of Sittingbourne and Milton in 1930, Mr. Callaway became joint surveyor to the new authority, with Mr. M. W. Lashmar, retiring in December, 1948, on account of ill health. At the outbreak of the last war Mr. Callaway became local fuel overseer for the district, a position he held up to 30th September this year.
Planned many local schemes
Mr. Callaway held the degrees of M.I.Mun.E. and M.R.S.I. and was responsible for the planning and carrying out of many major local works, particularly housing estates and road improvement schemes at Milton.
During the 1914-18 war, he was a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers and served in France.
Although he had not been in good health for the past five years, Mr. Callaway remained active and cheerful, particularly since undergoing an operation in July, 1952. He was a keen and enthusiastic supporter of Sittingbourne F.C. and attended both home and away matches whenever possible. During the summer months, he switched his attention to cricket and watched many of the Kent C.C.C. games in the county.
Mr. Callaway is survived by his widow, Mrs. W. M. Callaway, and three sons, Mr. Albert Edward Callaway, Mr. Stuart Gordon Callaway and Mr. Keith Douglas Callaway.
The funeral service takes place at St. Michael's Church, Sittingbourne, to-day (Friday) at 2 p.m. conducted by the vicar (the Rev. A. E. Blake), followed by cremation at Charing at 3 p.m.
