Mary's birthplace is given alternatively as either Iwade or Newington next Sittingbourne in Kent, about four miles south of Iwade. Children of William Hinge and Mary Fuller (married 1796 in Newington next Sittingbourne) were born in both these parishes as well as in the neighbouring parish of Hartlip, and Mary was mostly likely one of them. When Mary Hinge married William Callaway the witnesses named were Edw Hinge and S Hinge who were probably siblings Edward (b. 1799, Hartlip) and Sarah (b. 1815, Iwade).
