At the time of the 1891 England Census William Avis, age 38, born in Southborough Kent, agricultural labourer, and wife Jane, age 41, born in Pembury Kent, were living in Dunorlan Cottages, Tunbridge Kent. Lodging was George Lucas (17) of Tunbridge Wells, agricultural labourer.
At the time of the 1901 England Census William Avis, age 49, born in Southborough Kent, widower, carter on farm, was living in Dunorlan Cottages, Tunbridge Kent. With him was sister Mary Avis (40) of Southborough, single, housekeeper.

MR. W. AVIS.
The death occurred on Saturday at 29, Beulah-road, the residence of friends, of Mr. William Avis, in his 80th year. For 40 years Mr. Avis had been head carter at Dunorlan, and through the generosity of Mr. Carteret F. Collins had spent his last ten years of retirement in comfort. At the funeral which took place at the Borough Cemetery on Wednesday the mourners were:—Mr. and Mrs. Dunn, Mr. and Miss Cunnington, Mrs. Weekes and Daughter, Mr. Avis and Mr. Fry, Mrs. Sivyer, Mrs. Austin, Mrs. Hewitt, Mrs. Everest, and Miss Stubbings....
