The Therfield parish register records the baptism of Edward, son of Edward Hagger and Emma his wife. Edward and Emma had the same family name (i.e. Edward Hagger married Emma Hagger). The 1861 Census, per below, shows Edward, son of Edward H Preston and Emma H. At some point before 1861 the family name 'Preston' was adopted. As to the origin of the family name 'Preston' in this instance, and the reason why it replaced 'Hagger', has not yet been determined.

At the time of the 1861 England Census Edward H Preston, age 19, born in Therfield Hertfordshire, shoemaker, was with his parents in Buntingford, Layston, Hertfordshire.
At the time of the 1871 England Census Edward Preston, age 29, born in Therfield Herts, journeyman carpenter, and wife Elizabeth Ann Preston, age 35, born in Lewes Sussex, were living in New Town, Layston, Hertfordshire. With them were children Jessie Elizabeth (5) of Bassingbourn Cambs, and born in Buntingford Herts: Rosabel Minnie (4), Ernest Edward Alfred (2), and Frances Mary Ella (1 month).
At the time of the 1881 England Census Edw Hagger Preston, age 39, born in Therfield Herts, carpenter, and wife Eliz Ann Preston, age 45, born in Lewes Sussex, were living in Chancery Lane, Beckenham Kent. With them were children: Jessie E. (15) of Bassingbourne Cambridge, Earnest E. A. (11) of Buntingford Herts, scholar, Ellen F. M. (10) of Buntingford, Luther B. (8) of Buntingford, Edwd. S. (4) of Buntingford, and Ruth I. (1) of B.Ham Kent.
At the time of the 1891 England Census Edward H Preston, age 49, born in Therfield Herts, joiner & Baptist Minister, and wife Elizabeth A Preston, age 54, born in Lewes Sussex, were living at 3 Chancery Lane, Beckenham Kent. Present were children (a) born in Buntingford Herts: Rosabel (24), Ellen (20), Luther (18), joiner's apprentice, Edward (14), joiner's apprentice, and (b) born in Beckenham Kent: Ruth (11), scholar, William (9), scholar.
At the time of the 1901 England Census Edward H Preston, age 58, born in Therfield Herts, pastor of Baptist Chapel, and [2nd] wife Esther, age 46, born in Lewis Sussex, were living in Harbinger, Burstow, Surrey. With them was Edward's [great-]nephew George A. W. Wallace (17) of [Bishop's] Stortford Herts, house decorator.
