BY FALSE PRETENCES.

Some time was occupied by the Bench in the hearing of a charge brought against Ernest Edward Gravely, 61, of obtaining, by false pretences, a leg of pork, a loin of pork, and a piece of beef, value together 16s 6d, from No. 43, Bear Road, on the 21st inst., the property of Edward Ede.

The prosecutor, a butcher, stated that on Wednesday evening the prisoner came to his shop and ordered a leg of pork, about 12lb, telling witness that it was for a Mrs. Bridger's daughter's wedding. Witness showed him several legs, but prisoner said they were not large enough, and he would have a loin with one of the legs. He also ordered 12½lb of beef. Mrs. Bridger, prisoner said, would pay for the joints on delivery, and witness then sent his boy with the meat and prisoner to the Aberdeen Laundry. Subsequently, in consequence of a communication he received from the lad, witness gave information to the police.

Jack Clark, an assistant in the last witness's shop, corroborated, and added that he, in company with prisoner, took the meat to deliver it at the Aberdeen Laundry. Just before the reached the laundry, however, prisoner took the meat, telling witness that he would take it into Mrs. Bridger's and bring the money back, and witness then saw him go towards the laundry and disappear, he could not say where, as it was dark. In about ten minutes' time prisoner returned without the meat, and said Mrs. Bridger wanted a pound and a half of suet in the morning, and would pay for the whole then. When witness took the suet, however, Mrs. Bridger refused to take it in, saying she had not ordered it.

Mrs. Hetty Bridger, of the Aberdeen Laundry, Upper Lewes Road, gave evidence to this effect. She had a daughter, witness added, who, however, was not old enough to be married. Prisoner was her stepfather.

Prisoner now pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to a month's hard labour.
