At the time of the 1881 England Census Alfred Simmons, age 16, born in Chailey, was working as a page for Francis R Hepburn, rector of Chailey, in the Parsonage, Chailey.

At the time of the 1891 England Census Alfred Henry Simmons, age 26, born in Chailey Sussex, gardener - domestic servant, and wife Sarah Jane, age 26, born in Idle Yorkshire, were living in Reigate Hill, Gronways? House, Gatton Surrey. With them was Alfred's sister Caroline Simmons (17) of Newick Sussex, housemaid - domestic servant.

In Feb 1892 Alfred Henry Simmons was present at the marriage of his sister Alice Maude Mary Simmons to Alfred Day in Chailey Sussex.

In Jul 1895 Alfred Henry Simmons and his wife Sarah J Simmons were witnesses at the marriage of Alfred's brother Harry Thomas Simmons to Eleanor Mary Dennis in Teddington St. Mary, Richmond-upon-Thames.

In Apr 1900 Alfred H Simmons was present at the marriage of his sister Caroline Simmons to Frank Tarry in Brighton Sussex.

At the time of the 1911 England Census Alfred Henry Simmons, age 46, born in Chailey Sussex, jobbing gardener, and wife of 20 years Sarah Jane, age 46, born in Idle Yorkshire (mother of 4 children), elementary teacher, were living at 7 Gatton Park Rd., Redhill Surrey. With them were children (born in Kingswood Surrey): Eleanor Dorothy (15), school student and secondary school, Alfred Fitzroy Stowell (11), school student at elementary school, Harry Chas. Donald (9), school student at elementary school.

In the 1939 Register Alfred H Simmons (b. 17 Nov 1864), retired gardener, and wife Sarah J Simmons (b. 14 Dec 1864), retired teacher, were living in Ousedale Brook-street Cuckfield Sussex. At the same address were [son] Harry C D Simmons (b. 23 Jun 1901), chief clerk merchant & shipping, and his wife Edith M (b. 12 Aug 1892), unpaid domestic duties, and their son Keith D Simmons (b. 28 May 1927), at school.
