At the time of the 1901 England Census Emily Colwell, age 31, born in Lewes Sussex, and husband Charles Colwell, age 32, born in Lewes, barge builder, were living at 1 Timber Yard, Cliffe Sussex. With them was daughter Mabel E (1) of Lewes.

At the time of the 1911 England Census Emily Colwell, age 41, born in Lewes Sussex (mother of 2 children), and husband of 19 years Charles Colwell, age 43, born in Lewes, barge builder for a coal merchant, were living at 38 South St., Lewes Sussex. With them were children (born in Lewes): Mabel Elizabeth (11) and Sidney Charles (22 months), and Charles's widowed father William Norman Colwell (69) of Lewes, foreman in coal wharf.

In the 1939 Register Emily Colwell (b. 29 May 1869), unpaid domestic duties, and husband Charles Colwell (b. 6 Oct 1867), barge builder, old age pensioner, were living at 38 South Street, Lewes Sussex. At the same address was [son] Sydney C Colwell (b. 24 Jun 1909), single, senior clerk gas works.

MRS. E. COLWELL

Many friends attended the funeral at Cliffe Church on Wednesday of Mrs. Emily Colwell, of 38, South-street, a life-long Lewes resident, who died at her home on Saturday, aged 71.

For many years she was a member of the Lewes Sisterhood, and the Cliffe Mothers' Union. She was well-known in the town. A widower, Mr. Charles Colwell, a son and a daughter are bereaved.

The Rural Dean (the Rev. E. Griffiths) conducted the funeral service, the interment following at the Cemetery. The mourners were the widower, Mr. and Mrs. S. Colwell (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Lester (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. L. Lester (grandson), Mr. and Mrs. A. Huggett, Mr. and Mrs. W. Huggett (brothers and sisters-in-law), Mr. W. Huggett (nephew), Mrs. Grant and Mr. and Mrs. E. Colwell (brother-in-law and sister-in-law).

More than 40 wreaths were sent.
