He apparently accompanied his uncles, Peter and Philip de Courtenay, in the naval expedition of 1378, which was all but destroyed by the Spaniards. He was taken prisoner in the struggle, but was quickly ransomed. He served at sea as part of his brother's retinue from March 1387, under the admiral Richard de Arundel, Earl of Arundel and Surrey.
In 1399 he went to Ireland with King Richard II.
