Matilda (Maud) Beaumont
- Born: Shirwell, Devonshire, England
- Married: After 16 Oct 1417
- Died: 3 Jul 1467
- Buried: Haccombe, Devon, England
Research Notes:
Oliver, in his Monasticon Dioecesis Exoniensis, notes that Matilda was "the daughter of Sir William Beaumond, knight" and records her marriage licence dated 16 Oct 1417 "in capella mansionis dicti Willielmi Beaumond de Heaunton situata" (he does quote a full extract of the licence). Hingeston-Randolph's summary in English (no extract of the Latin original) records the licence granted by Bishop Edmund Stafford 16 Oct 1417 "for the marriage of Sir Hugh Courtenay, of Haccombe, with Matilda, daughter of William Beaumond of Heanton Punchardon, in the Chapel within the said William's mansion of Heanton…". Cleaveland's 1735 history of the Courtenay family says that Hugh Courtenay's "last Wife was Maud the daughter of Sir John Beaumont of Sherwell in Devonshire", which is disproved by the 16 Oct 1417 marriage licence: John was Matilda's paternal grandfather as shown above. The will of "Mawte that was the wyfe of Hugh Courtenay knight", dated 20 Aug 1464, made charitable bequests to St. Nicholas's priory and was witnessed and sealed by "Sir Hugh Courtenay, knyght, my son and heir".
Oliver, in his Monasticon Dioecesis Exoniensis, records her death 3 Jul 1467 and burial "in the lady chapel of S. Nicholas' priory"... 1
