In Jun 1822 Joseph Stephens was present at the marriage of his brother John Stephens to Rebecca Thompson, widow, in West Firle Sussex.

At the time of the 1841 England Census Joseph Stevens, aged about 45, ag. lab., and wife Fanny, aged about 40, were living in Alciston Sussex. With them was son James (20), ag. lab.

At the time of the 1851 England Census Joseph Stevens, age 56, born in Firle Sussex, ag. lab., and wife Ann M., age 34, born in Glynde Sussex, were living in Poakals, Alciston Sussex.

In 1855 Joseph Stephens was a residuary legatee of his father's Will.

At the time of the 1861 England Census Joseph Stevens, age 69, born in West Firle, agr. lab, and wife Ann M., age 45, born in Ashurst Kent, were living at 68 Wick Street, West Firle Sussex. With them were children (born in Alciston Sussex): John (10), agri lab, Caroline (6), scholar, Alfred (4), scholar, Ann (1).

At the time of the 1871 England Census Joseph Stevens, age 79, born in Westfirle, ag lab, and wife Ann Maria, age 54, born in Goombridge Kent, laundress, were living in Wick Street West Firle Sussex. With them were son John (20) of Westfirle, married, ag lab, son Alfred (13) of Westfirle, daughter Ann Maria (11) of West Firle, son Joseph George (8) of West Firle, John's wife Phebe (22) of Louth Lincolnshire, and their son William John (1) of Westfirle.
