"PASSING OF MRS. A. W. WELLINGTON
Eight Years' Christian Service in Pirie
(TRIBUTE BY S.W.O.)
ALTHOUGH she had reached, an advanced age, a wide circle of friends at Port Pirie heard with deep regret of the death of Mrs. Wellington at her home, Pearce street., Underdale.
Sincere sympatny has been expressed with Iiev. A. W. Wellington and mem bers of his family in their bereavement.
Mrs. Wellington, daughter of the late Mr. Christopher Temby, particularly well known and highly respected in the Two Wells and Mallala districts, was born in Cypress street, off Angas street, Adelaide, on July 16, 1853. Her schooldays were spent in Port Gawler district, where her father was a road contractor. Later Mr. Temby acquired an agricultural property between Two Wells and Mallala, known as Paddy's Station, where the present Korunye Siding is now situated.
In 1876 she married the Rev. A. W. Wellington,, then stationed at Kapunda. His subsequent appointments were Yongala, Kadina, Mallala, Adelaide (Morphett street), Norwood, Port Pirie, Broken Hill, Glenelg, Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Fremantle, Peterborough, Port Pirie (second term), and West Hindmarsh.
Altogether Mr. and Mrs. Wellington spent eight years at Port Pirie, five on the first occasion and three on the second.
Their surviving children are Messrs. A. G. (sergeant of police, City Watch house, Adelaide), Clem (Adelaide Steamship Company, Fremantle), Norman (postmaster, Georgetown), Mrs. H. W. Haslam (Underdale), Miss Ella Wellington and Mrs. Geo. Webb (Port Darwin).
Mrs. Wellington had a bright and attractive personality. Besides being a devoted wife and mother, she was a wonderful helpmeet to her esteemed husband in Christian and social service. I have always maintained that by his genial and happy manner Mr. Wellington has been a great influence for Christianity, and by her winsome ways his good wife deservedly earned a similar tribute.
She was ever the life and soul of any social gathering she attended, but I shall never forget how once her well-intended efforts to brighten some dull and awkward moments were spoilt by one of those individuals who never seem to have even a passing, knowledge of the eternal fitness of things." 7
