OBITUARY.

Dr. Godfrey Vivian is dead. This will be sad news for his friends in this county, and for everybody who knew him was his frie[n]d. The doctor has been failing for a number of years and passed away at his home on Sixth avenue, after a long and painful illness, this morning at 5 o'clock.

Dr. Vivian was born in Abadair, Wales, March, 1839, his father being English and his mother French. He came to this country when nine years of age with his parents. His father came to take charge of the Bruce mine, Canada, being a mining engineer, and later had charge of mines at Pittsburg and in the Lake Superior region. He was married in 1861 to Miss Clara Merryweather in Ontonogan, Mich., having earlier attended a medical school at Pittsburg and was with a Michigan doctor. He was mining physician for the Phoenix and Copper Falls companies until the spring of 1869 when he moved to Alexandria and enjoyed a large practice for over twenty years. Seven years ago he moved with his family to California for his health, but returned last fall and purchased the house where he died. He was an educated gentleman, a splendid surgeon and physician and a good citizen. He leaves a wife and five children, Fred, in the newspaper business at Niles, Mrs. Jenks, at Los Gratos [sic], Mrs. Retallick, Misses Kathreyn and Callie, all of whom are in California except Miss Katheryn who lived with her parents.
