In 1861 Richard W. Vivian, aged 44, born in Camborne Cornwall, mineral assayer, and wife Matilda L. Vivian, aged 43, born in Helston Cornwall, were living in Fore St., Camborne. Living nextdoor was Llewelyn Newton (75), father of Henry Vivian Newton, husband of Richard's sister Eleanor.

At the time of the 1870 U.S. Federal Census Richard W. Vivian, aged 52, born in England, miner, and wife Matilda Vivian, aged 52, born in England, keeping house, were in Brooklyn Ward 6, Kings, New York, USA.

In 1880 Richard Vivian, aged 63, born in England, married, miner and assessor, was boarding with the family of Henry & Emily Keller in Eleventh Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Wife Matilda Vivian (62) of England was with her daughter Matilda Bonetta (36) of New York, and her family (Joel of Portugal, and children Nellie V. and Joseph of PA).
