BENNETT, Samuel (New South Wales) newspaper proprietor; b. at Camborne, Cornwall, Eng. 28 Mar. 1815; arrived in Sydney in 1841 and was head of the printing department of the Sydney Herald for 17 years. He acquired and conducted the Empire newspaper (founded by Henry Parkes in 1850) from 1859 to 1875; founded the Evening News (Sydney) on July 29, 1867 and its weekly, the Town and Country Journal in 1870; amalgamated the News and the Empire in 1875. Bennett made the Evening News a force in N.S.W. Author of History of Australian Discovery and Colonization (661pp. brought down to 1831, Governor Darling's time); died at Little Coogee, Sydney, 3 June, 1878. The poet Kendall enshrined Bennett's name with those of Stenhouse, Harpur and William Ridley in By the Cliffs of the Sea. Eldest son, Alfred had the management of the papers on behalf of the family trustees till 1895 and thereafter his other sons Frank and Christopher, and finally Christopher until the interests of the various papers were floated into a public company. 4 5
