CORNISH BARD.
DEATH OF MR. GEORGE SLOGGETT
Cornishmen everywhere heard with much regret that Mr. George Sloggett, a Cornish bard, "Gwas Petrock" (Servant of Petrock), had died at his Cardiff home at the age of 76. He had been in ill-health for two years.
A retired consulting marine engineer and surveyor, Mr. Sloggett, who was born at Cremyll, Mount Edgcumbe, has, like all his family, been closely connected with ships and shipbuilding. His great-grandfather, Mr. George Sloggett, was a shipbuilder at Padstow (with which town the Sloggett family have associations of very long standing) from about 1788 to 1838. Each succeeding generation of that family has been connected with the shipbuilding industry, Mr. Sloggett more especially in Wales. During the Great War he was frequently in France attending to vessels carrying munitions.
In recent years Mr. Sloggett had spent an increasing portion of his time at his Padstow home, which was known to Cornishmen far and wide for its architectural interest and remarkable collection of antiques and objects d'art which Mr. Slogett housed there. In 1941 Tudor Close was, however, largely destroyed by an enemy bomb.
A member of the Royal Institution of Cornwall, Mr. Sloggett presented Mr. Herbert Truman's painting of the Cornish Gorsedd at Roche Rock, 1933, to that association. It will hang in the Institution's galleries as a memorial to the late Mr. Henry Jenner, Grand Bard "Gwas Myghai," who at Roche presided over the Gorsedd for the last time. The painting will also be valued as a characteristic work of a well-known member of St. Ives art colony.
Associated also with the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, Mr. Sloggett was connected with the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, the Cornwall County Wrestling Association, the Cornwall County Cricket Club and the Padstow Old Cornwall Society, in addition to many Welsh organizations. In 1935 he was admitted to the freedom and livery of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, and in the same year was admitted as a freeman of the City of London.
Mr. Sloggett, who was an active supporter of the Celtic Movement for Cornwall, was elected in 1938 for the second time as president of the Cardiff Cornish Society, retaining that office until his death on Wednesday.
The interment took place at Padstow yesterday.
