Death of Mr. T. H. Sloggett.
Captain Thomas Henry Sloggett, M.I.M.E., Roath, formerly a Board of Trade surveyor, died at Cardiff on Friday at the age of 89 years. For many years the family of Sloggett occupied a prominent place in the old commercial rolls of Cornwall. For generations the Sloggetts of Padstow, where deceased was born in 1823, were identified with shipbuilding, and Captain T. H. Sloggett himself was always deemed an authority on the design and construction of wooden vessels. He had owned and navigated them in all parts of the world, and had many adventures. It was while on a voyage near the Malay coast that he rescued six Dutch seamen, who had been captured by pirates, and handed them over to safe keeping at Hong Kong. Captain Sloggett, on relinquishing active sea life, was appointed ship surveyor to the Marine Department of the Board of Trade, a position which he occupied with characteristic thoroughness and fidelity for over twenty years. Captain Sloggett, who survived his wife but two years, leaves two sons and a daughter. The last-named is the wife of Mr. T. A. Reed, consulting engineer, Cardiff. One of the sons follows the medical profession in Melbourne, and is fleet surgeon to the Australian naval force, and the other is Mr. George Sloggett, superintending engineer and marine surveyor, Cardiff Docks.
