PADSTOW.

Mrs. Sarah Paynter Sloggett, aged 75, of Cardiff, died there on Friday last and was buried at Padstow, her native place on Tuesday. Mrs. Sloggett was the wife of Capt T Sloggett, one time master of an armed British East Indiaman, who saw much adventure in the days when pirates and other desperadoes infested the eastern seas. He, on more than one occasion, had to use his guns to maintain the authority of the flag under which he sailed. Mrs. Sloggett was sister to our townsman Mr J P Tom.

Funeral of the late Mrs. Sarah Paynter Sloggett, Padstow.

On Tuesday afternoon, at Padstow, the funeral took place of Mrs. Sarah Paynter Sloggett, wife of Captain Thomas Henry Sloggett, M.I.N.A., of Cardiff and Padstow. The deceased lady was in her 75th year, and died at her residence, 35, Stacey-road, Cardiff. Her early life was spent at Padstow, and the families of both herself and her husband have been associated with that place for several generations. Many blinds throughout the old town were drawn by sympathisers and friends, to whom they had long been known. The first part of the funeral service was held in the parish church, where, was a child, she was confirmed, and later on was also married. Her husband was baptised in the same church in the year 1823, he being now in his 87th year. Deceased was descended from old Cornish families on both sides, being the daughter of the late Mr. Gregory Tom, of Dennis Farm, Padstow, and her mother was formerly a Miss Eliza Paynter, a member of a well-known and ancient Cornish family of landowners and yeomen. She leaves three children, viz., Dr. Harry Paynter Sloggett, M.R.C.S. (who is practising medicine in Melbourne, and is now homeward bound in an Orient liner to visit his people after fourteen years absence, and is as yet unaware of his mother's death), Mr. George Sloggett, M.I.N.A., consulting engineer, Cardiff, and Mrs. Sarah Mabel Reed, 1st B.A., London (wife of Mr. T. A. Reed, M.I.N.A., consulting engineer and surveyor, Cardiff). The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. H. Ellis Clarke, M.A., the first portion, as intimated, being held in the old church, and the concluding part at the Padstow Cemetery. Amongst those present were the following relatives and friends:—Captain T. H. Sloggett (husband), Mr. Geo. Sloggett (son), Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Reed (daughter), Mr. Johnson Paynter Tom (brother) and Mrs. Tom, Captain A. B. Hutchings and Mrs. Hutchings (sister), Mr. and Mrs. Fred Biddick, Tredruston (niece), Mr. and Mrs. E. Hawkins (niece), Miss Marion Paynter and Miss Mary Paynter (Trevillador), Mr. Sussex Langford, Capt. Phillip Hawken (and others).... The coffin was of unpolished oak, handsomely panelled, and bore the inscription on a brass plate:—"Sarah Paynter Sloggett, born 26th September, 1835; died 17th June, 1910."....
