In 1841 James Curgenven was a beneficiary of the will of his grandfather William Paynter of Perleese, who left him £10.

In 1861 James Curgenven, aged 32, born in St. Kew Cornwall, assurance agent, and wife Jane Curgenven, aged 33, born in St. Breock, were living at 11 Mt. Pleasant Terrace, St. Andrew, Devon, England. Visiting was Milicent Paynter* (35) of St. Breock, unmarried, gentlewoman.

* Milicent Paynter was Jane's elder sister.

In 1881 James Curgenven, aged 52, born in St. Kew, builder's clerk, and wife Jane Curgenven, aged 50, born in St. Breock, were living in High St., Alton, Hampshire, England.
