" Mr. Bennett C. P. pioneer dies at 88.
Mr. Matthew Bennett, pioneer member of the Country Party, and former M.L.A. for Gippsland West, died yesterday at a private hospital at Malvern, aged 88.
Mr. Bennett was a leading member of the old Farmers' Union, which became the Country Party in 1928. He was one of the original members ol the C.P. Central Council.
He was elected to Parliament at a by-election in October, 1929, and held the seat without difficulty until last year, when he retired from politics.
Mr. Bennett, who had a dairy farm at Catani, in Gippsland, was one of the main agitators for the establishment of the Milk Board.
Mr. W. L. Moss, chief president of the C.P., said last night: "Mr. Bennett always worked hard for his electors.
"The esteem in which he was held was demonstrated, by the ease with which he retained his seat at every election."
The funeral will leave Sleight's chapel, St. Kilda rd., at 10.45 a.m. tomorrow for Brighton Cemetery." 6 7
