  Research Notes:

Mary Bawden died aged 64 years (burial record).

---------------------------

There is no direct proof that Mary's mother was Jane Williams. Based on her age at death, Mary [Rule] was born c. 1752, and of the five or so Mary Rules born in Cornwall between 1740 and 1755, only two were born c. 1752:— Mary daughter of John Rule, christened in Camborne on 26 Jul 1752, and Mary, daughter of James & Margaret Rule, christened 12 Feb 1753 in Mawgan-in-Meneage. Presumably the former rather than the latter married John Bawden in Camborne in 1773.

The christening record in the Camborne Parish Register for Mary Rule, daughter of John, does not name her mother. The compiler has assumed that her parents were married in either Camborne, Illogan or another adjoining parish. In Camborne, a John Rule married Mary Perking in 1720; in 1732 a John Rule married Jane Williams; and in 1746 a John Rule married Anne Hocking. In Illogan, a John Rule married Jane Bawden in 1751. The latter (John Rule and Jane Bawden) can probably be discounted, as they were having children in Illogan (John in 1753 and Jane in 1758). As to John Rule and Anne Hocking, they had a son John christened on 30 Mar 1752, and since Mary Rule was christened in the same year but on 26 July, it seems unlikely she was of the same family. It is possible that Mary was the daughter of John Rule and Mary Perking, as Mary wife of John Rule was buried in Camborne in 1753. However, a Richard Rule, son of John & Mary, was born in 1738 in Camborne, whereafter Hannah daughter of John Rule, born in 1740 (no mother's name given, however), may have been Richard's sister. After 1740, all children of John Rule born in Camborne (within the stated time period) show the mother's name, with the exception of Mary in 1752. Hence it seems improbable that there would be a twelve-to-fourteen year gap between Richard (or Hannah) and Mary, and, as such, John Rule and Mary Perking were probably not her parents. By a process of elimination, therefore, one is left with John Rule and Jane Williams as the parents of Mary.

  Marriage Information:

Mary married John BAWDEN of Condurrow, son of William BAWDEN and Elizabeth BENNETTS, on 19 Dec 1773 in Camborne, Cornwall 2. (John BAWDEN of Condurrow was born in 1751 in Illogan, Cornwall, christened on 24 Mar 1751 in Illogan, Cornwall and was buried on 18 Feb 1824 in Camborne, Cornwall.)
