John HARRIS of Bray

   Research Notes:

During the first decade and a half of the 1800s, there were two families of John Harris & Mary having children in Camborne. The first were John Harris and wife Mary Rogers who were married in the mid 1780s (This John Harris died in 1819, aged 54).

Hence we find in 1804, a year after John Harris and Mary Dennis were married, an Elizabeth Harris christened on 25 March and a Charles Harris christened on 11 November following. Since John Harris and Mary Dennis were married in July 1803, Elizabeth is assumed to be their eldest child rather than Charles. Again, in 1806, a Johnson Harris son of John & Mary and a Matthew Harris son of John & Mary, were christened. Since the maternal grandfather of John Harris (who married Mary Dennis) was called Matthew, Matthew Harris abovementioned is assumed here to be the son of this John Harris. Wife Mary was still living in 1841, when children George, Catherine, Susan and William were still at home.

It should be noted that some secondary sources show John Harris (who married Mary Dennis) as son of Benjamin Harris and Joan Bennetts. However, this John was born in 1792 in Camborne, and would have been only 12 years old when he married Mary Dennis. Rather, said John was more likely the same as found in the 1841 Census in Camborne, aged 50, with daughters Nanny (25), Elizabeth (20) and Jane (15).

John married Mary DENNIS, daughter of Benjamin DENNIS and Elizabeth FINE, on 2 Jul 1803 in Camborne, Cornwall. (Mary DENNIS was christened on 17 Feb 1782 in Camborne, Cornwall and died on an unknown date.)

John and brother Thomas married sisters.
