At the time of the 1891 Scotland Census Alexander Ross, aged 36, born in Tarbolton Ayrshire, shoemaker, and wife Jane, aged 35, born in Tarbolton, were living at 6 Back St., Tarbolton. With them were children (both born in Tarbolton): Mary (9), scholar, and Alexander (6), scholar. Alexander's mother, Mary Thomson (70) was staying.
At the time of the 1901 Scotland Census Alexander Ross, aged 46, born in Tarbolton, shoemaker, and wife Jane, aged 45, born in Tarbolton, were living at 6 Back St., Tarbolton. Present were son Hugh (4) of Tarbolton, mother Mary Thomson (80). Daughter Mary was working on James St., Tarbolton as a domestic servant for the family of Alexander & Annie Pinnock, and son Alex was working as a stable groom for Andrew & Margaret Blackwood at Barskinning Stables in Mauchline.
