In 1851 Joseph Tangye, aged 24, born in Illogan Cornwall, engineer, was with his parents in Broad Lane, Illogan.

In 1861 Joseph Tangye, aged 34, born in Illogan, hydrailic machinist, and wife Jane Tangye, aged 30, born in Redruth Cornwall, were living in Alston St., Birmingham Warwickshire.

In 1871 Joseph Tangye, aged 43, born in Illogan, widower, master engineer, was living in Church Lane, Handsworth, Staffordshire. With him were children (a) born in Birmingham: Annie M. (10), scholar, John (6), scholar, Albert W. (4), scholar, and (b) born in Handsworth: James F. (2).

In 1891 Joseph Tangye, aged 64, born in Illogan, retired mechanical engineer, and [2nd] wife Martha Tangye, aged 47, born in Leicester, were living at Hernes Nest, Park Lane, Bewdley, Worcestershire. With them were children Alice (17) of Handsworth, scholar, George Herbert (15) of Bewdley, scholar, and Catherine Maud (12) of Bewdley.

In 1901 Joseph Tangye, aged 74, born in Illogan, living on own means, and wife Martha Tangye, aged 56, born in Leicester Leicestershire, were living at Hernes Nest, Park Lane, Bewdley, Worcestershire. With them were children Alice (27) of Birmingham, single, George (25) of Bewdley, single, electrical engineer, and Catherine M. (22) of Bewdley, single.

DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN CORNISHMAN.

Many in Cornwall heard with regret of the death of Mr. Joseph Tangye, which took place on Thursday, at his residence, Herne's Nest, Bewdley. The deceased, who was the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tangye, of Illogan, resided up to 30 years of age at Illogan and Redruth, engaging in engineering work. Developing marked inventive genius, he and his eldest brother, Mr. James Tangye, succeeded in effecting important improvements in the machinery of the firms by whom they were engaged. Soon after Mr. Richard Tangye (now Sir Richard Tangye, of Glendorgal and Gilbertstowe) settled in Birmingham, the other brothers also removed to that centre, finally succeeding in establishing the large engineering firm of Tangye Brothers, now known all over the world, as the "Cornwall Works." The practical foundation was laid by Messrs. James and Joseph Tangye, the two elder brothers, both clever engineers, the financial part and extension being undertaken by Sir Richard Tangye and his younger brother, Mr. George Tangye, now of Heathfield Hall. The inventive genius and indomitable perseverance in bringing to perfection novel labour-saving hydraulic and other machinery displayed by the two elder brothers soon attracted attention, while the younger brothers were equally alert in their several departments. The famous patent pulley-block with catch had a rapid sale, and the patent being infringed, the Tangye Brothers successfully invoked protection from the Law Courts. The difficulties in launching the Great Eastern steamship, finally overcome by the use of the Tangye hydraulic jacks, consolidated their reputation as hydraulic engineers. Some years ago the two elder brothers retired from active work of the firm, Mr. James Tangye, to Aviary Cot, Illogan, and his brother, Mr. Joseph Tangye, now deceased, to Herne's Nest, Bewdley, each fitting up a well-appointed workshop for experiments and for the exercise of inventive talent, their inventions being often utilised by the firm. Mr. Joseph Tangye at one period used regularly to spend a month or two annually in Cornwall, his liberality to the young and old, especially to the needy, being very marked. Mr. Joseph Tangye's first wife was Jane, daughter of the late Mr. James Angove, of Redruth, who died at Birmingham at a comparatively early age in 1871, leaving three sons and a daughter. His second wife, who also has children, survives him. Wonderfully gifted, Mr. Joseph Tangye had the happy knack in early days of forgetting work out of business hours, and thoroughly enjoying a well-deserved holiday, throwing himself into the joy of the hour, and doing his utmost to raise the spirits of others, and add to their general comfort, always insisting on meeting all expenses of the party. Cornishmen may well be proud of his achievements as an engineer, and of his quiet and useful life. The funeral will take place at the Hockley Cemetery, Birmingham. Here Mr. Tangye's first wife was interred. The vault, of Cornish granite, surmounted by a massive tomb of polished serpentine stone from the Lizard or Poltesco quarries, on the summit of which is a broken shaft of the same stone, symbolic of her life closed at an early age, indicate unmistakably a deep-abiding love of Cornwall.
