"Rev. Edmund Smith Dies
After Collapse in Methodist Church at Salisbury
Following a collapse while preaching at the Methodist Church, Salisbury, on Sunday evening, the Rev. Edmund Smith died at his home about 4 p.m. on Monday. Mr. Smith, who was 58, had been minister at Salisbury for only a year, after a transfer from Walkerville. He had been suffering from blood pressure for some time. He was conducting his third service on Sunday when he became ill and was assisted home.
Mr. Smith was born at Caltowie, and served first as minister at Mount Gambier 30 years ago. Other districts in which he served include Mintaro, Angaston, Bute, Broken Hill, Bowden, Burra, Peterborough, Holder Memorial Church (Mile End), and Walkerville.
Mr. Smith was very popular among the public and beloved by all his congregation at Peterborough, being a very able and broadminded man, with a genial disposition. He revisited Peterborough in 1933 and preached at the "Back-to-Church" services at the Methodist Church.
He leaves a widow, two daughters, Jean (a Memorial Hospital nurse), and Gweneth (Salisbury), and three sons, Hartley (Pinnaroo), Gordon (Adelaide), and Murray (Prince Alfred College).
The funeral took place at the Payneham Cemetery on Tuesday." 5
