"Blind Man as Chess Player

PERTH (W.A.), Monday. When doctors warned him of approaching blindness five years .ago, Albert Russell Mill, aged 67, did not despair, but. determined that when total blindness occurred he would at least be able to con tinue to play chess. Accordingly, he experimented with chess pieces, which he could handle in the dark.

Now, totally blind, he is able to carry on contests with a circle of 20 blind friends, all chess enthusiasts, in Perth, Adelaide, and as far away as Brisbane. In spite of his affliction he has contrived to do excellent woodwork, and has constructed a trailer caravan. He conducts the chess contests by correspondence in Braille."

Albert married Emma Elizabeth DIXON, daughter of David W. DIXON and Mary Jane DELBRIDGE, on 3 May 1892 in Jamestown, S.A., Australia ^{1 2}. (Emma Elizabeth DIXON was born on 25 Mar 1870 in Moonta, S.A., Australia ⁸ and died in 1955 in Swan District, W.A., Australia.)
