Gregorios´s parentage is not known. However, it would be chronologically consistent if he was the son of Ashot Taronites. A seal dated to [1020] names "Gregorios Taronites, patrikios". Cedrenus records that "Gregorius
patricius Taronita" was wrapped in a bull´s skin and sent to "orphanotrophum" as punishment for rebellion, dated to [1041] from the context. A seal dated to [1050] names "Gregorios Taronites, magistros vestarches krites and doux of Optimaton".
