1606 July 17 Thursday. Demise to William Miles of Gabalua, gent., of a messuage and garden in "dobstreet," and lands in the close called " Kayer hanar," Ely Moore and Salt Meade. 1

Joan Owen was the widow of William Miles of Gabalfa, the son of Miles Lewis of the same. The Miles family of Gabalfa were rising minor gentry who were at this time busily building up an estate. They also acquired Henstaff in St. Brides, super Ely nearby, but their advance was frustrated by failure of male heirs before they managed to acquire major gentry status.

In the name of god Amen the xvith day of October 1628 I William Myles of Gabalva of the parishe of Landaff in the Countie of Glamorgan and Dioces of Llandaff gent beinge sicke in bodie but of good and perfecte Remembrance praise and thankes be given unto allmightie god therefore, consideringe with my selfe the frayltie and uncertentie of this martal life and desiorus to sett my estate and to dispose of that talent ---heare with god hath blessed me, I doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner and forme followinge That is to saie

First and above all other thinges whate so ever I give, bequeath and committ my soule into the hands of and tuition of allmightie god my maker & of Jesus Christe his sonne my saviour and redeemer by whose mercies I hope to be saved and to inhirit his everlastinge Kingdom in heaven. And as for my bodie I committ the same to Christian buriall in the Cathedrall church of Landaff neere wheare my antesessors have beene buried, as my wiff and my sonne Morgan shall thinke fitt in there discressions

Item: I give and dispose and my Will is that my saide wiffe shall have all my houshould stuff and the rest of my plate to use duringe her life, and yf my saide sonne Morgan shall outlive his saide Mother then my Will is that my saide sonne Morgan shall have and I doe heareby give unto him all my saide houshould stuff and plate but yf it shall happen my saide sonne Morgan to die or depart this life before my wiff his Mother, Then I give all the saide houshould stuff and plate unto my saide wiff Johan to dispose thereof at her will and pleasure

Item: I give and bequeath the Corne of ten acres of lands lyinge in Whitchurch and nowe fower with wheate unto my saide wiffe and my sonne Thomas Myles equallie to be devided betweene them

Item: Wheare as I have bought three acres of lands of Richard Griffith of St Fagans and Margaret his wiffe lyeinge and beinge in St Fagans aforesaide, to me and my heires forever, I doe heareby give devise and bequeath the same three acres of lands unto my sonne Thomas Myles and his heires forever

Item: I give and bequeath unto my saide sonne Thomas Myles fower score and three sheepe which are nowe greinge? or depasturinge in Whitchurch part wheareof are his owne already and the rest betweene me and him so that I give him all my part or the part thereof to me belonginge

Item: I give and bequeath unto my saide sonne Thomas Myles five younge beast of one yeare ould a peece and six younge beast of two yeares ould a peece

Item: wheare as I bought three acrees of lands called ca pen yr hewle and alsoe one acre and one other acre and a halfe in all contayninge five acres and a halfe of lands lyeinge and beinge in one cloase eutirlie?, my Will is that yf my sonne Morgan Myles doe paie unto Thomas Myles his borther xxxth of good and lawfull money of England within one yeare after my Decease without fraud, then I give the saide cloase of five acres and a halfe of lands called pen yr hewle unto my sonne Morgan Myles and to his heires forever, otherwise and in default of the payment of the said sume of xxx by my said sonne Morgan unto my saide sonne Thomas Myles within one yeare next after my Decease Then I give the saide cloase or parcell of lands lyeinge at pen yr hewle and contayninge five acres and a halfe of lands or there abouts unto my saide sonne Thomas Myles and his heires forever

Item: my Will is that my sonne Morgan Myles shall allowe and give sufficient . . . . . . . fodder and meate for all his Mothers Cattells till may next

All the rest and residue of my goods Cattells and Chattells and Debts whatesoever in this my last will and testament or other wise not given or devised, I give and bequeath unto my sonne Morgan Myles. Then I doe nominate ordaine constitut and appoint my saide sonne Morgan Myles my sole and whole executor of this my last will and testament, and I doe heareby revoke all former willes by me before this tyme made whatesoever
