SPORTSMAN'S DEATH
Penryn Funeral of Mr. Harold Thomas
The funeral of a well-known sportsman, Mr. Harold Thomas, aged 60, of Lanner Moor, took place at St. Gluvias Church, Penryn, on Tuesday. The vicar, the Rev. C. T. S. Lewis officiated.
Mr. Thomas was well-known for his interest and skill in many sports. He was a middleweight boxer and in the Army of Occupation in France in the First World War he became the middleweight champion, being awarded a silver cup. After the war he became a promoter arranged tournaments throughout the country and ran a sports club in Penryn.
While working in Yorkshire, Mr. Thomas became a professional Rugby player for Dewsbury Football Club (Northern Union League). He was a playing member of Penryn Rugby Football Club when the club became Cornish champions in 1921. He possessed many medals and other trophies, and during his boyhood was a great swimmer.
Mr. Thomas was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Almond Thomas of Penryn. On leaving the C. of E. Schools under the late Mr. W. E. Kneebone, he was apprenticed to the bakery business, and at one time carried on business in the town on his own account. He spent some time in America and on his return joined the Royal Navy. During the 1914-18 war years he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps and was eventually transferred to a British Army Unit. During the last war Mr. Thomas was a lieutenant and Platoon Commander of Penryn Home Guard. During latter years he assisted his younger brother (Mr. Stanley Thomas) in a bakery business in Penryn.
Attending the funeral were Messrs. A. J. Arthur and Stanley Thomas (brothers), P. T. Spurrier and T. Pendleton (nephews), W. Pendleton (brother-in-law), W. Medlin (cousin), and R. Paul and J. May (nephews)....
