He disliked convention

All friends and patients in Tonbridge of Dr. E. S. Cardell will regret his death recently in Devon. It was as a small boy that Dr. Cardell first came to Tonbridge. He retired from active practise in 1930 to Cullompton and never saw the town again. I'm told this was through no lack of affection for his old home but because of his innate dislike of travel, of a piece with his John Bull-ish conservatism. Of Dr. Cardell one who knew him intimately says: "He might well have exclaimed with Goldsmith's Mr. Hardcastle 'I love everything that's old: old wine.' To this was linked in Edward Cardell an equally English disregard for convention; he would do nothing just because it was 'the thing.' "

Thirty-year partnership

In his early life Edward Cardell was surrounded by a medical tradition. He grew up in what had been for many years a doctor's house, now shops in the High Street. His step-father was doctor to Tonbridge School and he was educated there—representing the School at both Rugby football and cricket. Dr. Cardell was always an outdoor man—gardening, natural history, fishing and shooting were among his hobbies. It was in 1901 that he entered into partnership with his brother-in-law, Dr. Andrews, a partnership that was to last nearly 30 years.
