At the time of the 1851 England Census William [sic] Duke, aged 38, born in Bexhill Sussex, General Practitioner, M.R.C.S., and wife Matilda Duke, aged 38, born in Hooe Sussex, were living at 26 George St., Hastings St. Mary in the Castle Sussex. With them were children (born in Hastings): Elizth B (9), scholar, Walter (8), Fanny (3?) and Fredk (7 months).

THE INFIRMARY.—By the lamented death of Mr. Walter Duke, one of the oldest and best-known of our medical practitioners, a vacancy occurs in the office of assistant-surgeon to the Infirmary. Several candidates for this honorary position are already in the field.

The Will with a Codicil of Walter Duke late of Hastings in the county of Sussex, surgeon, deceased, who died 4 April 1859 at Hastings aforesaid, was proved 22 July at Lewes by the oaths of Matilda Duke of Hastings aforesaid, widow, the relict, John Blackman of Hooe in the said county, gentleman, and Robert Deudney of Gensing in the parish of St. Mary Magdalen Hastings aforesaid, gentleman, the executors. Estate under £8,000. 3
