At the time of the 1881 England Census Henry Oates, age 41, born in Heckmondwike Yorkshire, woollen manufacturer, and wife Anna M Oates, age 32, born in Finsbury Middlesex, were living in Cemetery Road, Heckmondwike Yorkshire. With them were daughters (born in Heckmondwike): Ethel M (8), scholar, Jessie Mary (6), scholar, Annie M (2).
