David was the son of Malcolm Stewart of Blair Athol, Scotland, and Catherine Bromley of London. David was born on 6 Nov 1826 in London England. In 1834, Malcolm, Catherine and 5 children(Amelia, David Charles, Sarah and William) embarked on the "James" in London, arriving in Sydney 17 Nov 1834.
David and Martha lived at Surrey Hills for a short time and their first child Sarah was born there in 1860 . Sometime in 1860 David moved to Brisbane and set himself up as a bootmaker at 110 Edward St. Brisbane. He and Martha lived at West End. There home was called 'Mayvilla'. By 1883, they had 11 children although only 9 were still living.
In 1888, David moved his business to the Treasury Building(now a Casino) in George St. and worked here until he retired. At some time in the 1890's, he acquired a home in Abbotsford Rd Bowen Hills and he died there on 14 August 1897 of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. He was buried in the Toowong cemetery. 2
