1900 U.S. Federal Census (called William D.):
Age given: 18 years
Birthplace given: England
Dwelling Place: Newington town, Rockingham, New Hampshire
Occupation: Farm labourer
Called a "nephew" of Daniel and Ann Davis (i.e. previously Ann Newick). Daniel Davis is the head of the family. Given that Daniel Davis was born in 1826 and his wife in 1827, that would make William D. a "great nephew". Directly below them on the Census are Thomas and Jane A. (Bull) Newick, as well as Thomas's cousin Albert Newick (b. 1877). William D. emigrated to the United States with the Davis family in 1885.
As Daniel and Ann Davis emigrated to the U.S. with the young Willam D. and a spinster, Sarah Newick (age 21), and since Sarah was a niece of Ann Davis (née Newick), it would seem that William was Sarah's natural-born son, who was christened on 1 Jan 1882 in Etchingham Sussex as William Daniel Edward Newick, son of Sarah Newick. However, in his marriage record, he is called son of James Newick & "Sarah Davis", noting that there is no record in either England or USA for the marriage of a James Newick and a Sarah Davis. Again, in his death record, he is called son of John Newick and Sarah Davis, for whom there is likewise no record. Sarah Davis is probably synonymous with Sarah Newick abovementioned, most likely adopted by her uncle Daniel Davis and aunt Ann, still unmarried when she and William travelled to the US. His association with his mother's uncle and aunt would seem to suggest that he changed his second given name from Daniel to Davis.

William D. Newick, of Newington, New Hampshire, became a naturalised U.S. citizen on 1 Nov 1902. Witness was Henry Newick. William's birthdate is given here as 16 Oct 1881. However, his World War I and World War II Draft Registration Cards give 16 Oct 1882 (and the WWII DRC gives his birthplace as Burwash).
